A Time to Make Time

We all are given the same amount of time each week, day, month and year. We have things that we look forward to, and we have things that we do the best to get through. We can make plans, and we can go with the flow. We can do a lot of things whether they are on our to- do list or not, but we all get the same amount of time to work with.

Taking time to rest is a choice. Spending most of the day working is a choice. Being with friends or family is a choice. We all make choices on how we spend our time whether it seems like an actual choice or not. Take a moment to evaluate how you are choosing to spend your time.

Are you spending a lot of time alone? – Make time for your friends.

Are you spending a lot of time at work? – Separate time for something fun.

Are you spending a lot of time avoiding things you need to do? – Set aside time to do one thing on your list.

Are you spending time with people and activities that will help you in the future? – Good. Keep it up!

Are you spending your time wisely? – Find a mentor and ask what they notice about you.

Are you spending time resting? – Sleep is important. Start there and add more where needed.

Are you spending time … – Make time for what is important to you.

How are you spending your time? How are the people around you spending their time? How does the way other people spend their time affect the way you spend your time?

The way we spend our time matters. If we spend too much time one way or another, things in our life will not go as smoothly as they might be able to. Sometimes we have to use some trial and error to figure out what the best way to spend or not spend our time is.

Remember that as you are looking at new ways to spend your time, it is important to give yourself time to adjust to the new. I have been working my new job for over a month now, and I am still figuring out how to best use my time with my new schedule and commute. Finding and making rhythms for how to spend your time in the best way possible takes time. According to my quick “Hey Siri” search, it can take anywhere from 18 to over 200 days to form a habit.

That means that one habit takes a minimum of 18 days to get used to. When you totally change your everyday life, it is going to take longer when changing multiple habits all at the same time. That is okay. (It is normal.)

Often, I find myself wishing I had super powers to be able to get things done better or faster. As a human, we can only do so many things with the time that we have. Take a breath, hold it in, and let it out. Take on one moment at a time. Figure out what you feel like you are missing and make time for it. Everything else will fall into place when you take the time to do the things that you love with the people you love.

“You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.” – C. S. Lewis

“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” – Dr. Seuss

“Time is free, but it’s priceless. You can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it, but you can spend it. Once you’ve lost it you can never get it back.” – Harvey MacKay
