A Time to Recharge

When you become an adult whether it is when you get out of college, get into the working world, moving out of your parents house, starting a life with someone, creating a new human being, or continuing to attempt to make more money than you are spending there is no “how to” guide that just comes along with. If there was, half of the people who got them would not read them anyways. So what do we need to learn how to do so that we are able to recharge and do so to stay well? Of the following 8 pieces of advice, take what sounds like you actually could achieve, and leave the rest. If you are mastering a few of these already, challenge yourself to a next level. Maintenance is not failure. Remember to give yourself grace during challenging seasons in life, too.

1. Make sure you have time off. No matter if it is an hour a day, a day a week, one day a month, or once every couple of months – make a point to schedule yourself some time off.

2. During your time off, don’t work. This may seem obvious, but some people really have a hard time of leaving work at work especially when your home and work places have collided.

3. Make time to sleep. Your brain needs time to rest to catch up with what is really happening. Your body needs time to heal, too.

4. Make sure you get up and move once in a while. This may be your form of scheduled off time. If you plan to move in a way that you find to be fun, you will be more likely to continue moving and see progress and strength.

5. Plan something fun. Depending on your personality type, staying at home, going out with people, or a combination of the two is a great way to recharge. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people! They may also be looking for someone to do something fun with, but not know who to ask.

6. Make sure you take care of yourself. Your self talk matters. You are worthy of love. Going to therapy is not something to be ashamed of. It may take time to find the right fit, but there are people out there who are good at what they do and can help you find the strength you already have to become more authentically you.

7. Celebrate the small wins at work and in life in general. The small positives will add up over time, and they will start to add up against the losses.

8. As my dad always reminds me – drink water and take your vitamins. It does help. Sometimes when we feel hungry it is just because we need some water.

Start with just one thing if this seems like too much, and overtime add what makes sense to you. Like I’ve said before, just because it works well for me does not mean it is going to work well for everyone. I know it won’t. We as people are meant to share our life experiences and learn from others as no two people have the same story. My hope and prayer is that you will take some time to recharge, and that you have more energy to do what really matters to you once you have really truly taken that time.
